Born and grown up in Shimoda. But I've come to know how to enjoy myself concerning the sea, only after I became the member of the Academy. The words,"seashore exploration," gives a general sense, but never what to do for sure. I remember it was when I was gazing at the water pool on the rocky shore, that I noticed the fishes, crabs and seashells exchanging greetings. What lovable little creatures ! I could not help feeling affection toward them. If you find a woman sitting still and watching down on the rocky seashore, please call me, 'Teru-ney !,' and join me.Comment
Many many years ago, Izu Peninsular was born when the undersea volcanic explosion started in the Pacific Ocean, far south. There are so many strange places and unique living creatures in Izu Peninsular. Walk around rocky seashore and explore geo spots, to fully enjoy the Izu Peninsular, "A Gift of volcanoes from south." For families with small children, the set program of exploring seashore and geo tour is recommendable. Indulging in the blessing of nature for the whole day, surely makes you the master of Izu Peninsular. My recommendations
- Superb view spots of Shimoda recommended by local guides
-
The view of Shirahama Beach is really superb with blue ocean and the white sand. But what is curious is there remains in the stratum of the nearby cliff, the existence of another beach of about 5 million years ago. What it means is the beach appears totally anew after the uplifting, erosion and plate shifting, etc. of the ancient beach, which takes such a long period. A real marvel of the history of the earth!
- The most favorite spot in the ocean of Shimoda and what makes the spot so special
-
Enjoy Ebisu Jima Island, small uninhabited island with a bridge to cross over. The current keeps the water extremely transparent. And the colorful tropical fishes always welcome you. Rochy plate, called Senjyojiki extends to the Pacific and many strange sea creatures are to be found. Beautiful volcanic strata are impressive. A mysterious island with ancient sites of prayer unveiled.
- We will show you how you can spend time and enjoy Shimoda.

The Izu Peninsula is rightly called the “Land of the Gods,” home to numerous sacred sites of prayer. In Shimoda, traces remain where sacred fires burned continuously at Shirahama Shrine, Mihogasaki Cape, Ebisu Island, and Ongoku Island. Our faith has its roots in the reverence for the volcanic activity of the Izu Islands since ancient times. Walk among these places of prayer and imagine the faith passed down through generations.
