Outline of the program

Shimoda City has followed the residence of Sawamura Family, who had been running the dock company since the middle of Edo Era, and renovated thoroughly, from the external repairment of namako-wall, addition of earthquake-free structure and construction of an exterior toilet, etc., to reopen it to welcome whoever visits Perry Road, plus affording him/her rest place. The first president Kyuemon Sawamura followed the family ship repairment factory and expanded to found Shimoda Dock Company. The dock yard company, called amiably 'Shimoda Dock' by everybody had long been the front runner of regional industry at the tip of Izu Peninsular, until structural change of the industry gradually deprived its dynamism. In 1987, at the shareholders' meeting, it concluded to dissolve the corporation after 90 years history. The popular 'Reki Machi (historical town) Card' is delivered free, at this site representing the history of the town.

Program schedule

'Ancient Sawamura Residence' is located with its back to the lush green hill of Shimoda Park. From here stretches the Perry Road, to the opposite end, the premises of Ryosenji Temple, where Treaty of Shimoda (13 additional regulations for Convention of Peace and Amity between the U.S. and Japan) is negotiated.
