The steep mountains of Amagi and the fertile satoyama areas are the sources of Shimoda’s beautiful sea.
You can visit satoyama (traditional Japanese communities near mountains), wasabi fields, and designated Geo-spots with unique geological features by cycling or Nordic walking. Horseback riding and golfing are also available.

Far south in the deep sea, Izu Peninsular was formed as submarine volcanoes, and gradually moved northward until it collided with Japanese Mainland. We learn about the interesting stories about Izu Peninsular Geo Park, registered as UNESCO Global Geopark, through lectures, experiments and playing. The activity covers from the courses for the whole school to the family program, on your requests. ■ 1, The courses for schools. (lectures) About Geo sites in Shimoda, the history of the town and environments. Experiments of volcano. Field works. Guide tours to Geo sites. Sea shore exploration. Etc. ■ 2. The programs for the family, which varies according to the requests of each family. (Observe the strata of Ebis island and explore the sea shore. Sand skiing and walking around Ryugukutsu Sea Cave. Etc.) Children 10 years old and over can participate with no accompanying adults.

Open air sea cave,”Ryugu Sea Cave,” when looked down, shows you the beautiful heart shape. This is one of the most popular geo spots of Izu Peninsular Geopark. Inside, when you go down to the bottom, reveals the diameter of 50 m. With the close observation, this famous geo site gives you many hints about how Izu Peninsular is created. Walking tour gives you many chances for learning as well as amusing moments. Why don't you try riding down the slope of Sand Ski, just by the side of Ryugukutsu. (Optional rental sledge, payable)

Get on a ropeway to Mt.Nesugata(lying lady) noted for superb view and?a 'matchmaking power' ! ? From the observation platform on the summit, you can get the view of whole Shimoda Port, one of the two Japanese ports opened to the world with the U.S.-Japan treaty, and the ocean as far as Izu Seven Islands. In the flower park on the summit, flowers of each season greet the guests.? Some visitors bring their lunch and relax on the lawn. Aizendo Hall sacred to a god of ties is at the end of the promenade and is widely known as a power spot for love. ? Throwing Nagomi-Dama expands the human network, which also has good reputation. 200yen for 4 Nagomi-Damas.
